Arthritis Food To Avoid


One of the most common causes of age-related disability in the world today is inflammation of the joint commonly known as arthritis. Its prevalence has been spiraling and will continue to rise with the generation of baby boomers aging. There are more than 100 types of this degenerative disease that can cause pain and physiological deformities.

People suffering from inflamed and aching joints are symptomatic of arthritis but the causes can be variable. The many types of arthritis may manifest similarly however, each has characteristic features and symptoms that distinguished them from one arthritic disorder to another.

Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout are most common with people over the age of forty and affect nearly everyone past the age of sixty. It is typically hereditary and afflicts almost four times as many women as men. Oftentimes, it is the food intake that causes and triggers arthritis pain.

It is important for arthritis sufferer to know foods that aggravate arthritis and to put emphasis on those that are pain-safe. The kinds of food and beverages that trigger arthritis pain are similar to foods that set-off migraines. Alcohol, coffee, citrus fruits, dairy products, chocolate, bananas, onions, nuts, corn, soy products, spices like cardamom, mint and coriander are just some of beverage and food to avoid when you have arthritis.

By avoiding or reducing intake of red meat, fish, poultry, eggs, pork, grains particularly wheat or white flour can help slow the disease process. Eliminating everything that contains sugar like soft drinks, fats, fried foods and margarine can prevent or lessen arthritis pain from occurring. Gout sufferers are especially advised to completely avoid foods that are extremely uric acid forming.

More foods to avoid when you have arthritis are the nightshade vegetables like eggplant, peppers, tomatoes and white potatoes. These foods contain a substance called solanine that arthritic people are highly sensitive. Solanine interference with enzymes in the muscles can trigger pain and discomfort. By following foods to avoid for arthritis coupled with good exercise habits and maintaining reasonable weight, arthritis can be prevented or slowed down.
